“I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it! Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.”
According to the biographical Madam CJ Walker Essay by A’Lelia Bundles, located on www.madamcjwalker.com, it is commonly misstated that Madame CJ Walker invented the “perm, hot comb or pressing comb.”
Instead, in an effort to remedy the hair loss that she was experiencing, she created Madame Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower. She began to sell them door-to-door within her community. Just five years later, she built her own factory, salon and school.
She amassed a great deal of wealth in a short amount of time, becoming a millionaire and began to become involved in political activism. What’s amazing is not simply what she accomplished, but also the time in our nation’s history that it was achieved.
She truly created opportunities for herself and worked hard to reach her goals and dreams. Considering all of this, it begs the questions, “What is stopping you?” Are you waiting for your opportunities or creating them?
